Gen Z and Millennials Ditch Ibiza: Mongolia and Uzbekistan Emerge as Top Travel Destinations for Experience-Driven Travelers

Ibiza, once the millennial hotspot, is losing its appeal, especially among Gen Z travelers. A recent survey reveals a growing preference for experience-rich journeys to lesser-known destinations. Instead of party-centric vacations, young travelers are seeking unique cultural immersion and adventure.

According to a study by Generator, Mongolia and Uzbekistan are topping the list of trending destinations for those aged 20 to 44. In a survey of over 1,000 British travelers, 26% of Gen Z and millennials deemed Ibiza overrated, citing issues like overtourism and high prices. Thailand, popularized by "White Lotus," also faces similar sentiments from 15% of respondents.

So, where are they headed? An increasing number are opting for off-the-beaten-path adventures. Nearly 10% are considering Mongolia, while 5% are eyeing Uzbekistan. This shift aligns with broader travel trends, as the travel sector has boomed post-pandemic, with Gen Z spending more than ever on extended trips. A SOTI report indicates that Gen Z spends an average of €10,059 per trip, surpassing all other generations.

Moreover, experiences are now valued more. A report by Ibis and Globetrender highlights that young travelers seek deeper, less mainstream experiences, which the untouched and rich natural landscapes of Central Asia readily provide. The influence of #traveltok is also undeniable, with 71% of European TikTok users actively searching for travel-related content, and 77% admitting to finding travel inspiration through the app.
