Bali Tightens Tourist Rules to Combat Overtourism and Protect Culture

Edited by: Елена 11

Bali is implementing stricter rules for tourists to address overtourism and preserve its cultural integrity. Governor I Wayan Koster's regulations target inappropriate behavior and aim to safeguard the island's sacred sites and traditions.

The rules cover appropriate attire and conduct at temples, prohibiting entry to menstruating women. Tourists are expected to respect Balinese customs, dress modestly, and avoid offensive language or disrespectful behavior. Spreading misinformation or hate speech is also forbidden.

In addition to conduct guidelines, Bali introduced a tourist tax of IDR 150,000 (approximately EUR 9) for international visitors in February 2024. This fee funds conservation efforts and is collected upon arrival at the airport or seaports. Failure to pay the tax or comply with regulations may result in denied access to attractions or legal consequences.

These measures reflect Bali's commitment to sustainable tourism that respects local values and ensures a harmonious balance between tourism and Balinese culture.
