Belfast, Maine, Says No to Cruise Ships: New Ordinance Limits Cruise Tourism Starting March 18, 2025

Edited by: Елена 11

Belfast, Maine, a charming town of 7,000 residents, has enacted a new ordinance effectively banning most cruise ships from its harbor. Approved on March 18, 2025, the law prohibits cruise ships carrying more than 50 passengers from embarking or debarking at city facilities. This decision comes after the Belfast Harbor Advisory Committee recommended the limit in November 2024, citing safety and navigation concerns following a small number of cruise ship visits in the summer of 2024 that caused congestion due to limited dock space and parking. While Belfast lacks major tourist attractions, it offers antique shops, art galleries, and a scenic harbor walk. The new ordinance ensures the town remains largely untouched by cruise tourism. This move aligns with a growing trend of destinations grappling with the impact of cruise tourism. Bar Harbor, Maine, has already capped daily cruise guest arrivals, and other destinations like Sitka, Alaska, and various international locations are considering similar measures to manage cruise ship traffic.
