Get ready for a change in how you travel to Europe! Starting in 2025, the European Union will implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This new system requires travelers from over 60 countries currently visa-exempt to obtain an authorization before entering the Schengen Area. Think of ETIAS as similar to the systems used by the United States, Canada, and the UK. It's not a visa, but it is a mandatory requirement for entry into 30 European countries. The ETIAS will be linked to your passport and valid for three years, or until your passport expires. Once approved, you can visit the EU as many times as you like for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period). The application will be online and cost 7 euros, with exemptions for those under 18 and over 70. The goal is to enhance security and streamline border procedures. While an exact date is yet to be announced, the EU will provide a six-month grace period to allow travelers to adjust to the new rules.
