Chinese tourists are choosing long itineraries for Golden Week 2026

Ahead of Golden Week 2026, Chinese travelers are increasingly booking not short getaways but extended itineraries spanning several cities and even different continents. According to Trip.com, demand for such trips has risen noticeably, especially to Europe, Australia, the United States and New Zealand.

Golden Week traditionally serves as the peak of domestic tourism, yet this year the picture is changing. Travelers from China are increasingly planning trips of 10–14 days or more, combining capitals with the regions. This allows them to immerse themselves more deeply in the culture and avoid the rush of typical short tours.

The growing interest in far-flung destinations is tied to several factors. The recovery of international flights, the simplification of visa procedures in a number of countries and pent-up demand after the restrictions of recent years all play a key role. European cities, Australian and New Zealand landscapes, and American landmarks attract those seeking new experiences beyond the familiar Asian routes.

Multi-city tours are becoming especially popular: tourists combine, for example, Paris with London or Sydney with Melbourne. This format makes it possible to optimize time and budget, as well as to gain a fuller impression of a country. Evidently, this reflects a broader shift in preferences — from the number of visits to the quality and depth of experience.

Economic and social changes are also influencing the choice. China's growing middle class has greater opportunities for lengthy travel, while younger generations increasingly value authenticity and variety. At the same time, demand for Europe and Oceania points to an interest in cultural exchange and natural contrasts that are hard to find at home.

For host countries, this means the need to adapt infrastructure and services to longer and more varied flows. Cities and regions ready to offer flexible programs and comfortable conditions for multi-stage trips gain an advantage.

Ultimately, Golden Week 2026 is becoming not merely a period of mass recreation but an indicator of how Chinese tourism is evolving toward more mindful and extended travel.
