Special Olympics PNG Empowers Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities Through Leadership Training Program

Edited by: lirust lilia

Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (SOPNG) conducted a leadership training program for 25 athletes with intellectual disabilities at John Guise Stadium. The training aimed to enhance their communication and leadership skills through courses such as 'Introduction to Athlete Leadership' and 'Understanding Athlete Leadership.' The program combined theoretical knowledge with practical activities, and facilitators emphasized key leadership qualities and roles within Special Olympics and the broader community. Each athlete will be paired with a mentor to provide ongoing support and development. Acting Program Manager Ectopia Ame highlighted the importance of leadership development for personal growth, noting that such training is not commonly taught in schools. Student participant Zechariah Abaik expressed enthusiasm for applying his new skills in school. SOPNG plans to offer additional training sessions, including a Family Network program, to further support athlete development. This initiative empowers athletes to take on leadership roles within SOPNG programs and their communities, fostering personal growth and confidence.
