Mindfulness and Support: How the University of Pavia Helps Students Cope with Challenges

Edited by: lirust lilia

The Growing Need for Psychological Support

In recent years, the number of students experiencing emotional difficulties has significantly increased. During the academic year's opening ceremony, the Rector of the University of Pavia, Francesco Svelto, highlighted the alarming rise in requests for psychological support. He emphasized that any form of learning that promotes isolation can negatively impact students' emotional well-being. As a result, the university is focusing not only on in-person learning but also on support programs that enhance students' psychological health.

Two New Paths to Student Support

In response to the growing demand for psychological assistance, the University of Pavia has launched two initiatives as part of its psychological counseling service. These programs aim to develop self-regulation skills, emotional management, and stress reduction strategies.

  1. Skills Training GroupThis course is based on the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Marsha Linehan. DBT is recognized as one of the most effective methods for improving emotional regulation and self-efficacy. The program is conducted in small groups, where students learn practical techniques that can be applied in both academic and daily life. The sessions encourage open communication and active participation in a supportive environment.

  2. Mindfulness Program (MBSR – Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)The university's second initiative is a free MBSR course available to all students. It is designed to reduce psychophysical stress and enhance emotional resilience. The program is based on mindfulness practices, helping participants to observe and accept their thoughts and emotions without judgment. According to the university’s official statement, the central goal of MBSR is to teach the skill of present-moment awareness, allowing students to better cope with daily challenges.

Mindfulness as a Tool for Psychological Well-being

The development of accessible psychological support programs highlights the University of Pavia's commitment to student well-being. In today's world, where stress levels are continuously rising, learning mindfulness and emotional resilience is not just an additional resource but an essential part of the educational experience. These initiatives help students not only overcome difficulties but also cultivate healthy habits that contribute to their personal and academic success.
