Blue Buffalo, owned by General Mills, launched the Life Protection Check AI tool in the United States on 3 October 2026. Dog owners can photograph a competitor's bag of food and receive a detailed comparison of ingredients with the closest Life Protection Formula recipe.
The tool runs on Google's multimodal Gemini model and covers 60 products from seven leading brands: Purina, Purina Pro Plan, Hill’s, Iams, Royal Canin, Rachael Ray Nutrish and Pedigree. The comparison shows differences in composition and claimed benefits, and ends with an offer of a free first 5-pound bag of Life Protection Formula and reimbursement of up to 25 dollars upon uploading a receipt.
Blue Buffalo cites NRF data: 41 % of American consumers already use AI to make purchasing decisions. The tool is available at maketheswitch.bluebuffalo.com and lets owners quickly assess how well their current food matches their expectations for ingredient quality.
The comparison is based on an analysis of labels and claimed benefits, but does not replace verification of the AAFCO statement of nutritional adequacy and balance. Owners are advised to consult a veterinarian when changing food.
The launch of Life Protection Check is the first major step by a major American brand to turn AI comparison into its own customer acquisition channel. The tool intercepts the search for “the best food 2026” and directs it into the Blue Buffalo funnel, collecting switch data directly.
