Why Do Cats Make Funny Faces? Understanding the Feline Flehmen Response

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Have you ever seen your cat sniff something, then make a strange face with its lips curled up? This is called the Flehmen response, and it's perfectly normal for cats.

The Flehmen response helps cats analyze scents, especially pheromones. Pheromones are like chemical messages that cats use to communicate with each other. Cats use a special organ called the Jacobson's organ, located in the roof of their mouth, to detect these scents.

When a cat Flehmens, it's drawing air over the Jacobson's organ to get a better read on the scent. This behavior is more common in male cats, especially when they detect the scent of a female cat in heat. But all cats, even indoor ones, will Flehmen when they encounter new or interesting smells.

Flehmen is usually nothing to worry about. It just means your cat is curious and investigating its environment. Just make sure it's not confused with signs of illness like panting or sneezing. If your cat seems distressed, consult a vet.

So, next time you see your cat making that funny face, remember it's just using its amazing sense of smell to explore the world!
