Aline Béguelin overcame her fear of dogs thanks to her first dog, a Labrador. Now, she and her partner Pablo Choffat share their home with Horace, a Leonberger, a breed known for its massive size and gentle nature.
Leonbergers, originating from Germany, were bred to resemble the lion on the town crest of Leonberg. These dogs typically weigh between 100 to 170 pounds and stand 26 to 31.5 inches tall. Males are larger than females. They are known for their friendly temperaments and long coats.
Horace brings joy to Aline and Pablo, requiring them to manage his diet carefully to prevent obesity, as Leonbergers aren't naturally super athletic. Overfeeding can lead to a life-threatening stomach issue known as gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), or bloat. They also require regular grooming to prevent matting in their thick fur.
Leonbergers are affectionate and see their family as their flock, displaying protective behaviors. Mornings with Horace are a celebration, filled with affection and a daily walk. Traveling with a Leonberger requires adjustments, as they often claim the entire back seat of the car.
Grooming is essential, and owners should brush them daily to prevent matting and manage shedding. Leonbergers thrive in homes where they receive plenty of attention and have space to exercise. They are loyal and intelligent dogs, known for being gentle giants when properly socialized and trained.
