Airport's Dynamic Duo: Hercules & Ned Keep Wildlife Away From Planes

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Flying can pose risks to wildlife near flight paths. Luckily, some airports employ dogs to keep animals away. West Virginia's International Yeager Airport has Border Collies Hercules and Ned on the job. Their handler, Chris Keyser, says Ned is learning fast from Hercules. They keep the airfield clear of wildlife during takeoffs and landings. Ned was initially trained to herd goats and geese. Now, he uses those skills at the airport. The dogs scare away animals like birds, deer, and foxes. Air traffic controllers alert Keyser to any potential dangers. The dogs run five to seven miles daily, rain or shine. Hercules is getting older, so Ned is a welcome helping hand. Together, they've reduced wildlife strikes at the airport by 70%! They also comfort passengers. Hercules has an Instagram page where fans can follow their adventures. Ned has even made some cameos. Hercules and Ned are a valuable asset to the airport.
