A dog owner filmed the moment she told her two mastiffs about the new cat living in their home. The canines' reaction has left internet users in hysterics.
The viral TikTok video, shared in November under the username @sabrenamorgan, shows the two dogs, Phyllis and Murphy, standing by the door. They stare into the living room, where the cat, Zoe, is presumably hanging out, shocked by the discovery.
"Breaking the news about the cat that lives here now," reads the caption. While the pups are taking their time to get to know their feline sister, it doesn't mean they won't accept her. In fact, dogs and cats can often live together in harmony.
A study published in 2020 in the journal PLOS ONE found that over 64 percent of pet owners reported their cats and dogs played together. Additionally, 58 percent of pets chased each other, while 41 percent had playful fights. Interestingly, cats were more likely to ignore dogs, with 42 percent of cats shunning their canine friends.
To help pets become friends, introductions should be slow and mindful. It's important to create separate areas for each pet with their necessities. The British animal charity Blue Cross suggests starting with a "scent swapping" phase. This can be done by exchanging bedding to help them get familiar before meeting.
Supervising their interactions is essential. Using treats or rewards for positive behaviors can make the experience enjoyable for both pets.
The video has received over 1.3 million views and more than 78,800 likes. Comments from viewers have been humorous, with one user stating, "The cat will be the boss of them BOTH in no time!" Another remarked, "The betrayal on the pups' faces. I see live action cartoons in your near future."
