Vito the Pug Makes History at 2024 National Dog Show

In a remarkable achievement, Vito the pug has won the title of Best in Show at the 2024 National Dog Show. This victory is historic as it marks the first time a pug has claimed this prestigious award since the show's inception in 2002.

Vito, a charming two-year-old from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, triumphed over more than 1,900 dogs from over 200 breeds. His handler, Michael Scott, expressed optimism leading up to the event. When the announcement was made, Vito looked up at Scott with a curious tilt of his head, as if trying to grasp the excitement around him.

Show judge George Milutinovich praised Vito's beautiful expression and movement, stating, "He's very smug. I think he knows." Vito competed against six other finalists, including a clumber spaniel named Houston and a Welsh terrier named Verde, who secured the Reserve Best in Show title.

The National Dog Show is a beloved Thanksgiving tradition, attracting around 20 million viewers each year. Founded in 1879, it has been held annually since 1933 and has been televised since 2002. This year, the event introduced a new breed, the Lancashire heeler, adding to its rich history.

Pugs, known for their playful and loving nature, have a long history as the companions of Chinese emperors. With Vito's win, this small but sturdy breed has solidified its place in the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.
