Sa Fundació Supports Protecting and Promoting the Balearic Language in the Balearic Islands

Edited by: Vera Mo

Sa Fundació has expressed its support for the initiative that aims to protect and promote Balearic as the native language of the Balearic Islands, reinforcing the right of citizens to preserve their linguistic and cultural identity. The organization also welcomes the proposals for information campaigns and opinion polls to give a voice to the public on language-related issues and its actual usage.

In a statement, Sa Fundació calls for reflection from the political parties that, for decades, have insisted on the imposition of standard Catalan in education and public administration. After more than forty years with this model, the results are clear: far from strengthening the language, there has been a progressive degradation of Mallorcan, Menorcan, and Ibizan, and a significant decrease in the number of speakers, many of whom have ended up adopting Spanish as their primary language. This reality is undeniable and warrants a responsible and self-critical assessment. The model has failed.

The entity emphasizes that, if the true goal is to ensure the survival of Balearic, it is urgent that our linguistic modalities are given preference and protection in all areas, especially in education and public administration. The will of the citizens cannot continue to be ignored, nor can our language be substituted by forms that do not align with our tradition and customary usage.
