Indonesia's Education System: Addressing PISA Scores and Striving for Improvement

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Vice Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI), Lestari Moerdijat (Rerie), emphasizes the importance of comprehensive improvements to the education system. This includes primary, secondary, and higher education levels to enhance the quality of national education sustainably. Rerie highlights the need for continuity between basic, secondary, and higher education to develop capable future generations.

Rerie points out that the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results show that Indonesian students' academic achievements have not met the targets set in the 2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). The PISA 2022 results show a decline in reading scores to 359 from 371 in 2018, while the RPJMN targets 392 by 2024. Mathematics scores also decreased from 379 to 366, with a target of 388, and science scores fell from 396 to 383, with a target of 402.

The government is optimistic that Indonesia's PISA scores can increase in 2025. President Prabowo Subianto has tasked his aides with improving the quality of mathematics education in Indonesian schools. The government has formulated strategies to improve PISA scores, including improving the learning process, enhancing teacher quality, and transforming the curriculum to be more flexible. The goal is to achieve PISA scores equivalent to OECD countries by 2045, in line with the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
