Indonesia Launches 'Sekolah Rakyat' Program: Free Education for Children from Impoverished Families

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos), has initiated the 'Sekolah Rakyat' (People's School) program. This initiative is designed to provide free, quality education to children from impoverished and extremely poor families. The program commenced on July 14, 2025, across 63 locations throughout Indonesia.

The Sekolah Rakyat is structured as an integrated boarding school, encompassing elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each school occupies a 6-hectare area and features comprehensive facilities, including laboratories, sports facilities, and dormitories. Essential provisions such as uniforms and learning materials are provided free of charge.

The curriculum aligns with the national curriculum, emphasizing character development, leadership, nationalism, and practical skills. Student selection involves verification of economic status and health checks to ensure a safe environment. President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the expansion of the program to 200 locations, aiming to reach more children in need.
