Mental Health Education: Integrating Emotional Well-being into Schools

Edited by: Olga N

Schools should be nurturing environments, not just cognitive learning spaces. Mental health is an integral part of education, as crucial as mathematics or language. The digital age brings new pressures like social comparison and cyberbullying, impacting students' mental well-being. Many students hide deep psychological wounds behind their phone screens. Excessive social media exposure can erode mental well-being, especially in young people. Schools are seeing more cases of student stress and anxiety. However, not all schools have trained counselors or structured mental health programs. Emotional interaction and psychological support in learning environments significantly influence a child's brain development. Integrating mental health education can start with basic lessons on emotions, stress management, and seeking help. Teachers and parents need basic mental health understanding to support struggling children. Schools need to become second homes that nurture students' bodies, minds, and feelings. Addressing mental health stigma and providing adequate teacher training are crucial first steps.
