The Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies in Brazil has approved a bill ensuring remote learning access for pregnant and lactating students. This includes access to course content and assessments across all education levels and modalities, such as high school, higher education, and vocational courses.
Deputy Franciane Bayer, the rapporteur, supported the approval of Bill 6384/19 and its appended project (PL 4870/20). An amendment clarifies that remote learning should not hinder mandatory in-person activities like internships or lab work. In such cases, students will be entitled to flexible deadlines or rearranged activities.
Federal government regulations will establish procedures for implementing these rules, respecting the specific needs of each educational stage and modality. Bayer stated that the project aims to combat a major cause of school dropout among women, ensuring motherhood doesn't compromise the right to education. The proposal will now be reviewed by the Committee on Constitution, Justice, and Citizenship.
