A recent study indicates that listening to specific Indian classical ragas can significantly impact brain activity, potentially offering new avenues for mental well-being. This research highlights the potential of ancient musical traditions to enhance focus and emotional regulation, benefiting individuals and society.
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, have discovered that Indian classical music has a measurable effect on brain function. The study, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, focused on the impact of Raga Darbari and Raga Jogiya on brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG).
The study involved 40 participants, revealing that Raga Darbari, known for its soothing qualities, increased attention-related brain activity and reduced mind-wandering. Raga Jogiya, with its melancholic tone, activated brain patterns associated with emotional control. These findings suggest the potential for these ragas to improve focus and manage emotions.
Professor Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi, noted the fascinating ability of ancient melodies to influence the brain. A parallel study on Western participants showed similar brain responses, confirming the universal neurological power of classical music. This research opens possibilities for personalized, music-based mental health tools.
This research demonstrates how ancient traditions and modern science can work together. It suggests that culturally relevant solutions for mental well-being may be found in our past. The study was conducted in India.
